Is there some way to attach a photo to a comment here. I have one that's appropriate.

Fair enough, I really don't have much desire to belabor the point seeing as I myself can attest to the relief and feeling of power over my own destiny and the freedom of conscience I finally experienced upon deconversion - I was elated.

you've ever seen the movie Pleasantville, there's a beautiful scene that gave me the inspiration

heh, it reminded me of a scene from "Joe vs. the Volcano."

Oh, on the contrary! I think that's one of the least allegorical parts of this story. When I started out to write my essay "Into the Clear Air", one of the things that most amazed me was the sheer number of testimonies I could find from people who wrote at length about the relief, happiness, and joy they found when they finally realized that they were atheists. I ended up posting a whole separate essay made up of nothing but excerpts from the stories I didn't have space to quote originally. It really does happen that way, and a lot more often than most religious people think.

Lynet:

You do know that's the loveliest moment so far, don't you?

Thank you for those kind words. :) I'm rather pleased with it myself - if you've ever seen the movie Pleasantville, there's a beautiful scene that gave me the inspiration...

I'm telling you that everything you care about, everything that truly makes your life meaningful, is there waiting for you. There's clear air, happiness and peace, surpassing anything you could imagine.
OK, nobody's a happier atheist than I, but you may be overselling it slightly here. :)

I looked, then knelt down. At my feet a small flower bloomed, improbably alive in this desolate place, its red petals and leafy green stem a startling splash of color against the drab sand.
