And We're Back

If you're seeing this post, then you've made it back! This is Daylight Atheism at its new, and hopefully much faster, host. Thanks for your patience. Regular updates will resume shortly.

I do have a request to make of my readers. Until the move, I hadn't upgraded WordPress since I first set up Daylight Atheism in 2006. I figured, since the move was happening anyway, it was about time I got around to doing that long-overdue software update.

As it turns out, the designers had introduced just enough interesting database incompatibilities in the intervening two years to make that job interesting. Nevertheless, after much grumbling and occasional cursing, I think I've gotten it all sorted out. (No thanks to God, but many thanks to the designers of Perl.) Posts, comments, and all the other data should be here, and commenting and other site functions should be working properly. But to be sure, I'd like to ask you, readers, to be my beta testers. If you have the inclination, please explore the site and kick the tires - check out some old posts, the archives, the search function, and make sure everything is present and working as you expect. If you find anything that's missing, broken, or odd, please drop me an e-mail and let me know. Thanks!

It works, as does the RSS feed.

Nice, it's snappy now. I was thinking of moving to your old host. I certainly will not be now. Thanks for disclosing their identity.

Glad to have you back online. :)

The links to "comment policy" "register to comment" and "log in" all give 404 errors.

The links at the bottom of each post should be operating now.

Oh, thank Loki. I was starting to get the shakes.

Seems to work fine so far. Did a search for an old classic post (linked here to make sure HTML links in comments work) and it worked fine. If I run into any problems, I'll let you know. Good to have you back!

All seems to be working. Since I missed the move announcement (busy week prepping for a trip) I was worried yesterday! Good to have you back.

Nice to see you back - I was getting worried for a minute.

Wow, it's actually noticeably fast! :)

(No thanks to God, but many thanks to the designers of Perl.)

Although curiously, the designer (or Benevolent Dictator For Life) of Perl is rather religious.
Larry Wall (WikiPedia).

Larry wall link again, sorry.

His "2 Rules" sound worryingly like a religion... ;-)

It's good to see you back, Ebon. And despite my failure to notice the slowness before, I'm appreicating the quickness now.

I'm getting "Invalid username" when I try to log in here. What's going on?

And when I try to register here, I find "Registration disabled".

I get the same thing. Doesn't recognize my name and password; won't let me register. Much faster, though.

Ah - good catch there. I still need to import the user registration data from my old site. I'll do that shortly and re-enable new user registration.

For some reason the url http://daylightatheism.org doesn't yet work, though it is probably a propagation thing and should be sorted out on its own soon. Thats the url I usually use, so I thought you were down a lot longer than you were :P

Doug

That URL works for me, Doug - what do you get when you try it?

All the user data from the old site has been imported, and registration should be reenabled. Let me know if you had an account before and have any problems logging in.

I seem to be logged in properly now, but the actual login form took me to a "you do not have sufficient permissions to access this page" message for http://www.daylightatheism.org/wp-admin/profile.php Since I wound up having to reset my password, not being able to get at my profile page to fix it is a bit of an inconvenience.

I'm successfully logged in, though I don't have access to my profile page. I haven't tried to reset my password yet, however.

Just curious --- who's your new hosting company?

Lunarpages is my new host. I knew they host the Talk.Origins Archive, and I figured my site doesn't get nearly that much traffic. :)

Alex/lpetrich: Try now. The not being able to access your profile was another database quirk in the new version, which should be fixed now.

I still can't log in: "You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page."

Whoops, sorry - I didn't convert all the users the first time. Try now.

http://www.daylightatheism.com works, but http://daylightatheism.com does not. I get the lunar web hosting homepage.

erg lemme try that again.

http://www.daylightatheism.org works, but http://daylightatheism.org does not. I get the lunar web hosting homepage.

That's odd, Doug - http://daylightatheism.org works just fine for me. I wouldn't think it would be a DNS propagation issue after this long, but I can't imagine what else the problem might be. If this problem is still happening in a day or two, can you let me know?

Okay. Working for me now.

At last, I can resume my role as resident gadfly!

I thought it might be a cookies thing, but the same happened in a different browser. So I figured I'd let it wait.

Today it works, so I dunno. Weird.

It seems to me that the site has become very slow again recently, to the same extent as it was before the move. I don't know if anyone else is experiencing the same thing, but it is slow for me from both work and home.

Ditto to mike's comment above. This morning, I couldn't even get to DA. Other days recently it's merely been very slow at various times.
