The above sounds like the internet jokes about Chuck Norris, only not a joke.

It starts with small children and their daddies, and then moves on to taller children and their daddy figures...

This in a hundred-year time frame, and I can speak from experience about a shorter one. Back when I ran a chain of martial arts schools, the managers of the branch dojos used to tell me the latest stories that were making the rounds: how I had beat up three guys, fought in a death match or whatever. Sometimes I could remember having had a sparring match or an argument, but often the legends were just invented out of thin air. This process didn't happen with the branch managers, or with me at the main branch where people had regular contact. It seems to be a natural result of followers who exaggerate to build up credibility for an authority figure who is largely absent.

In the *really* distant future, historians may even argue over whether there were two holy men named "Jesus" whose legends have somehow become entangled, or whether there was just one and the apparent inconsistencies the product of textual corruption.

Err, I meant "saint" and not "deity" in the penultimate sentence.

See, where was this Jesus Malverde guy during my misspent youth, when every eighth of Mexican herb I smoked was raspy and gave me a headache? Those Sinaloans should've replaced him with a more efficacious deity. After all, he couldn't stop paraquat.

<blockquote>"Thank you Malverde for saving me from drugs," writes Isaias Valencia Miranda, from Agua Zarca Sinaloa.</blockquote>Strikes me as an odd sort of activity for the patron saint of drug runners to be involved with.

And all that within the last hundred years and during a revolution in mass communication. Two thousand years ago a retold story could be rendered all but unrecognizable during the trip from one village to the next. And on the basis of that kind of testimony we're told we must abandon our critical sensibilities and turn our lives upside down to accord with it. If we don't, we're in league with transcendent evil and will rightly burn for eternity in Hell.

Gads! How could I have peddled that kind of nonsense for so long?
