would be more accurate to compare promiscuous and unprotected gay sex to drug or alcohol abuse.
Actually it would probably be more accurate to compare any promiscuous and unprotected sex to similar addictive and dangerous behaviours, without singling out homosexuals.

Danny,

I'm assuming everyone here realizes that the feelings toward homosexuals that the Christian church is supposed to have is beyond just "tolerance" and "putting up with it" - we are suppose to actually love them and care about them beyond the average diversity accepting requirements of modern culture.

I don't "realize" that at all. How do I know that Fred Phelps isn't correct and god does "hate fags?" The Bible is not very tolerant of gays. So, how can you proclaim that your way is right and what god wants?

I see Christians compare homosexual conduct with drug or alcohol abuse a lot. But here is where the analogy fails. It would be more accurate to compare promiscuous and unprotected gay sex to drug or alcohol abuse. But two people of the same gender who are in a monogamous relationship and use proper protection while giving each other sexual pleasure is more like a person who has a wine with his or her dinner at a restaurant or relaxes with a beer on the couch after a hard day at work. Not terribly dangerous or unhealthy.

@Danny - always happy to please! ;-)

I ask this out of curiosity and a spirit of discovery - not to shout at you - but what exactly is it about homosexuality that you don't want to condone? The analogy to hard drugs seems to suggest that it's something you see as dangerous... is this right, or is there more to it than that?

You still love your kid wholeheartedly, but what you see them doing is something you definitely don't condone.

The problem with this Danny is it is the love for an errant child approach. Homosexuals are'nt mis-behaving, they are expressing their nature and insofar as it hurts no-one else, they shoudn't have to apologise for that.

"Well then why is it, exactly, that conservative Christians so consistently fail to do this?"

That is a question I wish I could answer and resolve. Hopefully you all can take solace in the fact that some - including myself - are trying very hard to do just that.

"As the potential for an ironic typo goes to infinity, the probably that such a typo will actually occur goes to one. Fact."

Ditto...

Danny:

I'm assuming everyone here realizes that the feelings toward homosexuals that the Christian church is supposed to have is beyond just "tolerance" and "putting up with it" - we are suppose to actually love them and care about them beyond the average diversity accepting requirements of modern culture.
Well then why is it, exactly, that conservative Christians so consistently fail to do this?

I hope I brought some sort of intelligence dialog in from the "dark side".
As the potential for an ironic typo goes to infinity, the probably that such a typo will actually occur goes to one. Fact.

I'm a Christian and believe in God, but I did greatly enjoy reading through your responses here. Of course, I had opposing views for a few comments that I might as well share and I have no problem with you tearing them apart - it's always good to have your views tested.

@Renshia: Obviously the sarcasm is duly noted, and I agree that a lot of these mega-churches (and even smaller ones) do frighteningly resemble an MLM or pyramid scheme, but I thought I should point out that there are a vast majority of churches (mine included) who take extra, sometimes extreme measures to be accountable for their finances. In my church's case, we vote each year on the salary of all church workers, taking into account market conditions, etc. I realize you didn't specifically generalize all churches as evil pyramid scheme-esque organizations, I just thought I'd point that out for you.

@Dominic Self: I don't agree with homosexuality, but that was a hilarious and well-made point. I'm assuming everyone here realizes that the feelings toward homosexuals that the Christian church is supposed to have is beyond just "tolerance" and "putting up with it" - we are suppose to actually love them and care about them beyond the average diversity accepting requirements of modern culture. Imagine if your child was into hard drugs (and I'm not saying homosexuality is as dangerous as hard drugs - it's just a convenient example that will mesh as something that is "not healthy" with the average reader out there). You still love your kid wholeheartedly, but what you see them doing is something you definitely don't condone.

Eh, anyway - I hope I brought some sort of intelligence dialog in from the "dark side".
