Important Note

I have reason to believe that the database errors which caused my site to crash last week were the result of a malicious hacker trying to break in. As of now, I don't know whether DA was targeted specifically or whether the responsible party was just looking for any vulnerable site to attack.

Last night, I found several user accounts that had been elevated to administrator privilege levels without my knowledge. I deleted these and set up some countermeasures to prevent a similar attack from happening again, but it's possible the attacker had access to my database for some time. As far as I can tell, nothing has been changed or deleted, but if anyone notices any broken links, strange changes to posts or comments, or any other oddities, please contact me. If you have a user account here, I'd also recommend changing your password.

Best wishes to you for the safety of the site!

Thanks, Tommy. What I really need to do is upgrade WordPress, but I've been putting that off because it's always been a major hassle in the past. If experience is any guide, it'll involve at least a few hours of downtime as I work out all the charming little database and plugin inconsistencies introduced from one version to the next. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and do it this weekend.

Hooray for bullet-biting! There is always more anxiety in avoiding something than in facing it. And best of luck to you, as well. I don't know what I'd do if my sandbox came under attack; I'd probably just move on to something else. Then again, picking up and starting over from scratch is how I grew up, so I guess I'm a little more used to it. You've got a great thing going on here, though, so I think it's totally worth a weekend of arguing with the machine. Happy arguing!

Don't know if this has any relation (probably not) but when I googled Daylight Atheism this morning, it was no longer the first hit. Some pantheistic-seeming site called Living Cosmos.com or something was first. At any rate, it seemed weird and unfortunate to me.
