It was early in the morning when Rae and Will entered the campaign headquarters. They had arrived together, but they took pains to enter separately. She went first, and he followed a few steps behind.

Despite their precautions, Jane’s glance settled on them and Rae felt a flush of embarrassment. She was sure the leader of the Pacific Republic knew what had happened between them.

Before she could say anything, Miranda handed them each a large, steaming mug of coffee.

“Here. You look like you could use this.”

“Marry me,” Rae sighed.

“When we decide to open our relationship, we’ll be sure to let you know,” the ecologist said with a wink.
