The Owl and its crew flew into the night. America unrolled beneath them like a carpet. Mountains, rivers, cities appeared on the horizon, and in an eyeblink, were receding into the distance.

Piotr had configured the sensor arrays to tap into local news broadcasts, which he was playing on small screens for Jane, Sophia, Dr. Singh and the rest of the crew to watch.

Jane had been displeased, telling Will sternly that they would have to have a talk about unauthorized changes to a tactical plan. But she was mollified when she saw that their passage hadn’t generated any media coverage. A few message boards were chattering about UFOs or shooting stars, but there was no breaking news, no headlines.
