At reveille the following morning, Zoe was awakened by a guard’s nightstick rapping on the bars of the cell.

“Kolettis! Mail call!”

“I’m up, I’m up,” Zoe murmured sleepily, not yet awake enough to comprehend the words.

A half-forgotten fragment of poetry flitted through the drowsy recesses of her mind: Somewhere the dawn breaks laughing o’er the sea, in that alluring world that is not ours…

Then she sat up as she realized what the guard had said.

There was an envelope on the floor.

She picked it up with trembling hands. It was thin, no thicker than a single folded sheet of paper.
